Continuing our Wine Focus month on Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio of exceptional quality and style, we find a winner from Northeastern Italy. Today's tasting, La Cadalora 2006 Pinot Grigio, comes from the Vallagarina region in the lower, relatively mild southern end of Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige. It is made in the village of Santa Margherita, a community that gives its name to a popular and much more pricey Pinot Grigio. Frankly, I would rather have this one. Fresh and complex, with ripe citrus fruit and subtle earth, ample acidity and medium body, it's a fine Pinot Grigio. You'll find my tasting notes below.

La Cadalora 2006 Pinot Grigio Vallagarina ($17)Clear straw color. Fresh and complex white fruit, honeydew melon and lemon curd, with a subtle earthy back note reminiscent of fresh porcini mushrooms. Good fresh citrus notes in a tart, medium-bodied flavor, crisp and clean in a very long finish. U.S. importer: Vintner Select of Mason, Ohio, and other regional importers; a Marc de Grazia selection. (June 16, 2008) FOOD MATCH: A fine match with a simple thick natural pork chop. VALUE: This local price is on the high side, but it's not unreasonable in the middle to upper teens. WHEN TO DRINK: Best enjoyed relatively young and fresh. Drink up over the next year or so.
