Craziness about Sriracha sauce

by Karen/NoCA » Thu Jul 13, 2023 10:31 am

So there is a shortage of the peppers which the sauce is made of. People are putting their stash of the sauce on ebay and selling for ridiculous prices. Never fails to amaze me how stupid people can get. There are so many brands of this sauce out there, and even those who live in an apartment can grow a few fresh green and red jalapeño peppers, Fresno, serrano peppers, and Thai chili peppers in a pot and make their own. It is not that hard. I see no shortage in our local grocery store, by the way.

AFAIK, the jalapeno shortage only impacts US-made brands. But that includes Huy Fong's Rooster brand, which is the biggest seller in the US. Hence the panic. I personally use Shark brand, which is imported from Thailand, where they have no chile shortage. I don't like Huy Fong sriracha. Too coarse and not really like the real thing. IMO getting your sriracha from Huy Fong is like getting your Parmesan cheese from a green can.

Maybe this shortage will give more people the opportunity to try real sriracha.

I didn't even realize that the chile shortage wasn't over by now!

Not really a Sriracha fan. One bottle lasts me about ten years.

I never cared much for it either until I bought a bottle of Lee Kum Kee. I use it in my tomato juice, along with a Lisbon lemon ice cube. It is not the only hot sauce I use each morning but it is my favorite. I have quite a collection of hot sauces.
