Space age cooking pin.jpg

I don't remember if I mentioned this before, but I own one or two of these space-age cooking needles invented by a Sandia Lab? scientist here in Albuquerque about 50 years ago. They were about $5 back then, and they have some form of liquid inside that circulates to more quickly heat up the interior of whatever. They do work. I sometimes use a needle through a turkey when I roast it.

Anyone else have one?

Cool ad. They show up occasionally on ebay and etsy if anyone wants one.

So, it's like putting a few extra forks into a bird's cavity before roasting?

The Space Age pins are essentially heat pipes that are used on more than poultry, and their heat transfer is many times more efficient than solid metal such as forks or cooking nails. Heat pipes are used in many scientific and commercial applications for their heating or cooling efficiency (just ask NASA).

For yucks, I found a cutaway view:

Yes, I read the old eGullet thread. It's good physics but, apparently, indifferent cookery. The experienced user over there says there is not enough exposure on the incoming end for it to make much difference at the outgoing end.

It's a good thing my beautiful, shiny Space Age Pin can't read because it would lose confidence and not work well for me anymore. I also keep my pin stored in a separate drawer so it can't hear the forks talking.
