I attended a Super Bowl party at my son's house today. Last year he went on a tour of Ireland, and being into things Irish, he obtained "Irish Food and Cooking", a cookbook, which includes the following recipe:
Baked Onion
Place 4 medium onions, unpeeled, in a baking dish with a small amount of water. Bake in a preheated 350F (180C) oven for one hour. Remove from oven, peel and serve.
Cook's note: If you decide to peel the onions beforehand, put them in a covered baking dish.
