Duca Leonardo Duca Leonardo 1997 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo ($3.99)
How much wine can you expect for four bucks? In this case, a surprising mouthful of ripe fruit and food-wine structure. Garnet in color, with ripe cherry and spicy oak aromas and a cleansing flavor of sour-cherry fruit, it's far from fancy; but it's hard to beat for the price. U.S. importer: La Gioiosa USA, Atlanta. (Nov. 28, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Char siu barbecued pork (a take-home bag from lunchtime dim sum).

Previous day's wine note

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
