Verget de Sud 1998 Vin de Pays du Vaucluse ($7.99)
From Verget, a Burgundy shipper known for wines of good value, made in a style to suit perceived American tastes, now comes Verget du Sud ("Verget of the South"), a new line of budget wines that also seem aimed at the U.S. market. This one's fruity and fresh. Clear, bright ruby in color, it offers good cherry and strawberry aromas after an initial sulfury whiff blows away. Clean, fresh and bright, peppery fruit makes it a good quaff; nothing fancy but a satisfying match for burgers or steaks.
U.S. importer: Vintner Select, Cincinnati. (Nov. 1, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Fine both as a cooking medium and table match for filetto al Barolo, tenderloins pan-grilled with a red-wine reduction.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.|
