Pieropan Leonildo Pieropan 1996 Soave Classico Superiore ($11.99)
For most Americans whose entire experience of Soave is shaped by the mass-market Bolla, this fine Italian wine will come as a revelation. Clear pale gold in color, it breathes delicious scents of tangerines and honeydew melon. Crisp, fresh and tart, its citric flavor is consistent with the nose, and remains clean and refreshing in a long finish. U.S. importer: Empson (USA) Inc., Alexandria, Va. (Oct. 31, 1998)

Mazzei Mazzei Poggio alla Badiola 1996 Toscana ($12.99)
Dark ruby in color, this Sangiovese-based red table wine from Tuscany resembles a good Chianti with its aromas of black fruit and spicy oak. Ripe, mouth-filling juicy fruit and sweet oak add flavor appeal, while lemon-squirt acidity and a whiff of black pepper provides plenty of structure and persists in a fairly long finish.
