Indigo Hills 1995 North Coast Pinot Noir ($8.99)
A couple of weeks ago, I tasted a winery sample of Indigo Hills (Gallo) Pinot Noir that tasted oxidized and "cooked." Since it had been through unknown treatment in shipment followed by room-temperature storage for several months of an Ohio Valley summer, I figured fairness dictated giving it another try, so I purchased another bottle at local retail. Conclusion: It was much better this time. Clear ruby color. Light, pleasant black-cherry aroma. Soft, juicy fruit flavor, black cherries and spice. Can't compete with the more pricey Pinots, and it's probably not intended to do so; but it certainly gives the competition at this price point a run for its money. I'd absolutely choose it, for example, over the much-ballyhooed Napa Ridge. (Oct. 15, 1997)
