Dao Grão Vasco 1996 Dão ($6.99)
Most of us know Portugal primarily as the source of Port, but Dão, a historic region that's been lightly regarded during most of this century, may bear getting to know. Made from a variety of grapes, but most notably the Touriga Nacional (the major grape of Port), Dão can be a rich, full and ageworthy red or a fruity quaffer. This low-end rendition is approachable, a dark ruby wine with an orange glint, showing blueberries and spice and a whiff of caramel on the nose and warm, plummy fruit and zippy acidity on the palate. FOOD MATCH: Fine with a quick Italian-style dish thrown together from leftover lamb and sausage with fresh tomatoes and orzo.
