Sanford Pinot Noir Sanford 1995 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Santa Barbara County "Barrel Select" Pinot Noir ($31.99)
Another celebratory occasion -- our anniversary -- calls for a splurge, and this time we turn to the U.S. after enjoying a fine 1989 Ch. L'Evangile Pomerol to celebrate my wife's birthday last month. This fine Pinot from California is an inky dark-ruby color, with delicious earthy Pinot aromas, cherry cola backed by earthy "forest floor" and leathery nuances that echo its Burgundian kinship without giving up its U.S. citizenship. Ripe, tart black fruit fills the palate, consistent with the nose; layered and complex, mouth-filling Pinot character persists in a long finish. (Aug. 10, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Its earthiness and fruit work well with grilled Cornish hens in a lemon-oregano marinade.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
