Sottimano Cotta Sottimano 1996 Cottà Dolcetto d'Alba ($11.99)
Very dark reddish-purple. Berrylike aroma with floral hints of violets. Soft at first, intense fruit almost seems sweet (hence "Dolcetto"?), but dries out on the palate and finishes long and smooth, with mixed-berry and floral notes that echo the nose. Excellent wine! U.S. importer: Vintner Select, Cincinnati; a Marc de Grazia Selection. (July 9, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Good match with strip steaks braised in a light tomato and wine sauce.

Mauro Veglio Dolcetto Mauro Veglio 1995 Dolcetto d'Alba ($11.99)
Inky dark ruby color. Spicy oak seems dominant over berry fruit. Fully, juicy fruit flavor and lemon-squirt acidity, more youthful than the aroma suggests. Still, I wouldn't hold this three-year-old Dolcetto any longer; it's a wine to be drunk up young. U.S. importer: Vintner Select, Cincinnati; a Marc de Grazia Selection. (July 7, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Fine with ham steaks pan-grilled with a slice of sharp Cheddar. I find Dolcetto usually a good match with ham.
