Monzio Compagnoni 1997 Bianco della Seza Terre di Franciacorta
I had meant to hold on to this wine - one of a set of three from Monzio Compagnoni that our friend Luca Mazzoleni gave us to bring home after our visit to Bergamo - to share with other members of our Wine Lovers' Discussion Group at a future gathering. But a dinner entree cried out at the last minute for a really good Chardonnay, and this was the only one in the house, so out came the cork. It even looks rich, a clear bright-gold in color, and big and intense scents waft from the glass when the wine is poured: Honey, mint and apple butter in a sinuous dance. Full and round on the palate, ripe apple and buttery flavors fill the palate, big and rich. It's reminiscent of a New World Chardonnay - in fact, it reminds me quite a bit of my limited experience with Marcassin - but more structured and balanced than I would expect in a Cal-Chard. FOOD MATCH: Wonderful with a rich, meatless main-dish course of bread pudding with leeks and Swiss cheese.
