The Coteaux du Languedoc is becoming increasingly persuasive as a consistent source of excellent red wines, and in my opinion, Peyre Rose makes some of the very best. This one, for instance ...

Domaine Peyre Rose 1992 Clos Syrah Léone Coteaux du Languedoc ($14.99)
Inky dark garnet in color. Brooding black fruit and herbal "garrigues" aromas with a touch of leather, definitely "organic" but discreet about it. Full-bodied, intense black fruit flavor, consistent with the nose. Tannins still quite evident -- this remains a young wine -- but there's so much fruit that they stay in perspective. Delicious wine, impressive in its complexity and balance. How much longer can it remain undiscovered and thus affordable? U.S. importer: Willett Distributing, Alexandria, Ky. (Feb. 26, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Just right with pan-grilled, peppery strip steaks.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
