Rabbit Ridge 1995 California Allure "Rhone Style Red Wine" ($7.99)
Clear garnet in color, with simple red-fruit and caramel aromas. Better on the palate than the nose, frankly, with juicy red fruit, fragrant pepper and lemony acidity coming together in balance. Pleasant table wine in the style of Southern France, although I'd say it reminds me more of a simple Languedoc than a Rhone. According to the back label, it's a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Cinsaut grapes, aged in oak. (Jan. 2, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Went well with sauteed chicken breasts dusted with Asian spice and topped with a slice of whole-milk mozzarella; the cheese seemed to bring the delicate chicken up to meet the fruity red.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
