Frescobaldi 1997 Remole Chianti ($9.99)
Dark ruby with an orange glint. Very spicy aroma, cinnamon and cloves, over good red-berry fruit. Crisp, fresh and tart, a hint of tannins; lemony acidity and juicy black-cherry flavor; a benchmark Chianti at a very fair price. U.S. importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, Ill. (Jan. 14, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Good with boneless chicken breasts simply sauteed with garlic; better yet - almost spectacularly so - with an intense roasted-beet soup.
Tito Columbaia 1997 Falchini Chianti dei Colli Senesi ($11.99)
Dark ruby, with good black-fruit aromas framed by oaky spice and a whiff of caramel. Bright and juicy flavor, a bowl of fruit with restrained oak, well structured by tart acidity. Balanced and fresh, another of 1997's examples of Chianti the way it ought to be. U.S. importer: Worldwide Wines Inc., Cheshire, Conn. (Jan. 13, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Rings the bell with lamb chops pan-grilled with fresh rosemary.
