Cahors Les Hauts de Chambert 1996 Cahors ($8.99) [Best Buy!]
Clear garnet, rather light for a wine whose ancestors were once known as "black wine." Pleasant red-fruit aromas with marked, pleasant overtones of cedar and rose petals. Full, bright fruit and oak flavors, consistent with the nose, red fruit and spice; lemony-tart fruit in a surprisingly long finish. Impressive wine for a single-digit price. U.S. importer: Kysela Pere et Fils Ltd., Winchester, Va. (Jan. 6, 1999)

FOOD MATCH: Fine with a shepherd's pie made with leftover beef pot roast.

Micalet Château Micalet 1995 Haut-Médoc Cru Artisan
Very dark garnet, almost black in the glass. Oaky spice and simple, rather shy black-fruit aromas; similar on the palate, fresh but simple fruit and significant tannins. Price receipt misplaced, but almost certainly under $10. U.S. importer: Willett Distributing Co., Alexandria, Ky. (Jan. 7, 1999)

FOOD MATCH: Frankly better with garlicky roast chicken than when tasted alone; the food match seems to help bring the tannins under control.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
