Julia Child and AIWF Author of a dozen cookbooks and hostess of an array of food-related television programs, Child burst into public view as "The French Chef" in 1963. Her individual style, easily parodied but easy to love, made her an unexpected culinary icon, a status that has lasted to this day. Well into her 80s but still going strong, Child recently announced plans to leave Cambridge, Mass., her home for the past 40 years, for the comfort of a retirement home in her native California. While most of us won't be in a position to take first-person advantage of this opportunity, I thought you might enjoy knowing about a gala benefit event that takes place the day after tomorrow as Child's Boston-area friends bid their favorite "foodie" farewell. It's a lavish, five-course dinner in her honor at the Boston Harbor Hotel, with a squadron of the city's top chefs - Jody Adams, Tony Ambrose, Evan Deluty, Todd English, Stan Frankenthaler, Gordon Hamersley, Barbara Lynch, Jamie Mammano, Frank McClelland, and the hotel's executive chef Daniel Bruce - presiding in the kitchen. The dinner is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the hotel's Wharf Room. A live auction featuring wines, hotel packages, restaurant meals and Child memorabilia go on throughout the evening. It's not an inexpensive evening out: Tickets are $300 per person. But it's in a worthy cause, with all proceeds going to the American Institute of Wine & Food (AIWF), a non-profit educational organization devoted to promoting the message of health and well-being through the enjoyment of good food and drink. Child is a founding member of AIWF, making this event a fitting capstone to a great public life. If you're interested in the dinner, you can make reservations at (617) 439-7000, Ext. 2523.
