Chateau La Roque 1995 Cupa Numismae Pic Saint Loup Coteaux du Languedoc ($12.99)One of my favorite red wines from Languedoc, I remain amazed that this bottling hasn't been "discovered" with the concomitant price inflation. On the market for a year and still available at retail, it's an amazing bargain at this price, the quality equivalent of plenty of "cult" wines selling for two to three times the price. It's an inky dark blackish purple in color, with full black-fruit and spicy oak aromas, chocolate and cherries. Ripe and tart in flavor, it offers mouth-filling black fruit and brooding complexity over snappy citric acidity and soft but abundant tannins. Delicious now (and a fine match with spicy beef) but will certainly benefit from two or three years in the cellar. (Last tasted Jan. 12, 1998, with consistent notes.) U.S. importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, Calif. (Dec. 3, 1998)
FOOD MATCH: Surprisingly good with a Szechwan-style stir-fry of beef with tangerine peel.
