Every now and then, when I'm just about ready to declare that all
Italian white wines are simple, boring stuff, I run into a remarkable
exception that disproves that rule.
Here's such an example from Lombardy, a wine so exceptionally aromatic and
complex that even my wife, who insists that it's a wine's duty to be red,
kept coming back for more.
Piume 1995 Oltrepò Pavese Malvasia ($14.99)
Pale straw color. Startling aromas, a blend of intense spearmint and peppermint with bizarre but appealing herbal notes of caraway and dill. Crisp
and fresh fruit flavor, full and tart and well-balanced, with those idiosyncratically delicious herb and mint flavors lingering in a very long finish. Importer: Elizabeth Imports, Denver. (Nov. 10, 1997)
I've been tasting quite a few Italian wines lately; to view other recent notes, check the Italy section of my Current Wine Notes page.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
