Every now and then, when I'm just about ready to declare that all
Italian white wines are simple, boring stuff, I run into a remarkable
exception that disproves that rule.
Here's such an example from Lombardy, a wine so exceptionally aromatic and
complex that even my wife, who insists that it's a wine's duty to be red,
kept coming back for more.
Piume 1995 Oltrepò Pavese Malvasia ($14.99)
Pale straw color. Startling aromas, a blend of intense spearmint and peppermint with bizarre but appealing herbal notes of caraway and dill. Crisp
