Alain Brumont Chateau Bouscassé 1994 Madiran Vieilles Vignes ($9.99)
Inky dark purple, almost black. Ripe blueberry and spicy oak aromas almost leap from the glass. Big, mouth-filling berry flavors follow the nose, laced up with lemon-squirt acidity and heavy tannins that might overwhelm a less flavorful wine but simply add structure to this one. Delicious now, excellent match with garlicky roast chicken, but it will reward extended cellar time. Importer: Jeffrey M. Davies Signature Selections, West Nyack, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 1997)

Madiran is hardly a household word among most wine lovers, but this robust, ageworthy red from the Armagnac region of far Southwestern France is starting to make a reputation for itself, largely through the efforts of this wine and its sibling, Chateau Montus. Pending its "discovery," it still offers extremely good value; just try to keep your hands off the young wines until it has time to mature.
