Clos de L'Oratoire des Papes 1996 Chateauneuf-du-Pape ($17.99)Very dark ruby. Black fruit, a hint of "barnyard" and a dash of black pepper in the aroma. Tart and "chewy" on the palate, consistent with the nose; a bit young and tight, and thus a little short. There's plenty going on in this wine, though, and real potential for a few years' cellar time. U.S. importer: "21," NYC. (Oct. 12, 1998)
FOOD MATCH: Very good with hickory-grilled pork chops; the smoky flavors and a spicy but not fiery Asian marinade bring the pork up to meet the wine.
