Sottimano 1997 Pairolero Barbera d'Alba ($13.99)
SottimanoInky dark garnet color, with ripe, plummy fruit and fragrant herbal aromas. Big and tannic, fruity and astringent; full and balanced but really needs time to come into its own. U.S. importer: Vintner Select, Cincinnati; a Marc de Grazia Selection. (Oct. 9, 2000)

FOOD MATCH: Italian-style "drunken pork" is good, but a rare red meat would probably go further to balance the tannins.

Rabbit Ridge 1998 California Barbera ($9.99)
Rabbit RidgeDark ruby in color, with marked butter and spice aromas more evident than simple fruit. Jammy black fruit on the palate, soft and almost overripe; oak is a bit dominant with its sweet butter flavors. Lightly astringent tannins show up in the finish. (Oct. 9, 2000)

FOOD MATCH: A nice match with Italian "drunken pork" in which some of this wine was used as a marinade.
