Three modest party wines

Tasked to bring wine to a party where most folks weren't seriously into wine, I threw together a basket of three modest bottles that wouldn't offend anyone -- including me.

Buena Vista 1995 Lake County (California) Sauvignon Blanc ($5.99)
Very pale straw color with a light melon scent. Dry, crisp and tart, neutral white fruit. OK food wine, but definitely un-memorable. (Aug. 2, 1997)

Terra Nova 1996 Maipo Valley (Chile) Sauvignon Blanc ($5.99)
Clear, pale greenish-gold. Light grass and green-pea aromas. Full and crisp flavor, follows the nose; simple and pleasant, definitely the better of tonight's two Sauvignon Blancs. Importer: Freixenet USA, Sonoma, Calif. (Aug. 2, 1997)

Undurraga 1995 Colchagua Valley (Chile) Merlot ($6.49)
Dark garnet color. Black-cherry, plummy fruit and spicy oak aromas, ripe and appealing. Soft and juicy fruit on the palate, with sufficient acidity for balance. Pleasant enough, obviously aimed at the "glass of red wine" set. Importer: Kobrand Corp., NYC. (Aug. 2, 1997)

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
