Plaisir de Merle 1995 Paarl Cabernet Sauvignon ($12.99)
Inky dark blackish-purple, literally opaque. Black fruit and spicy oak aromas are distinguished by the pleasant earthiness that seems to be a trademark of better South African reds. Bright fruit flavors follow the nose, with good earthy nuances and a very tart, lemon-squirt acidity in the finish. U.S. importer: Dreyfus, Ashby & Co., NYC. (Aug. 30, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Fine with a pan-grilled T-bone.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
