Morton Estate Morton Estate 1996 Hawke's Bay (New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc ($12.99)
Clear pale greenish-gold. Delicious gooseberry-green chile aroma, essence of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Full, almost unctuous, bright and juicy fruit flavors consistent with the aroma, clean and ripe in a long finish. Excellent wine, assuming you like this "outrageous" style, and perhaps the best quality-to-price ratio of the three good wines featured here. U.S. importer: Empson (USA) Inc., Alexandria, Va. FOOD MATCH: The wine's heavy, unctuous texture and sharp acidity make it a natural with a flavorful, "oily" grilled bluefish.

Jackson Estate Jackson Estate 1996 Marlborough (New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc ($15.99)
Pale brass color. Marked jalapeño pepper aromas with citric grapefruit. Crisp and full, bright flavors follow the nose. Green chile peppers persist in a long finish. U.S. importer: Empson (USA) Inc., Alexandria, Va. (Aug. 24, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Works well with pork chops braised with onions.

Sanctuary The Sanctuary 1997 Marlborough (New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc ($10.99)
Clear, pale brass color. Pleasant aromas of grapefruit and green chiles in balance. Crisp, tart and very dry, white fruit, green peppers and piercing acidity. Clean, fresh, perhaps a little short; still a very good food wine. U.S. importer: Appellation Imports, Annapolis, Md. (Aug. 26, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Perfect with fresh pesto on linguine. The "green" flavors marry in a good demonstration of the "match likes with likes" rule, while the wine's tart acidity balances the pesto's olive oil.
