Lucignano Fattoria di Lucignano 1997 Chianti Colli Fiorentini ($9.99)
Chianti Colli Fiorentini ("Hills of Florence") is grown in one of six defined areas outside the traditional Chianti Classico zone, but the wines share the same grapes and the same tradition, and I find them indistinguishable. Dark ruby color, with spicy oak, caramel and black fruit aromas. Tart black cherry flavors are backed by a level of acidity surprising in a Chianti, full and structured, with sour-cherry fruit hanging on in the finish. U.S. importer: Vintner Select, Cincinnati, a Marc de Grazia Selection. (Aug. 24, 1999)

FOOD MATCH: Fine with (and in) filetto al Barolo, Marcella Hazan's recipe for filet mignons pan-braised in red wine.

Previous day's wine note

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
