Planeta 1996 La Segreta Rosso di Sicilia ($10.99)
Very dark reddish-purple. Deep black-cherry fruit and spicy oak aromas. Full, juicy and bright flavor, fresh fruit and crisp acidity in balance. Clean and tart, fine with food, but all the delicious fruit makes it a good one for sipping alone. U.S. importer: Vias Imports Ltd., NYC. (Aug. 18, 1998)

FOOD MATCH: Fine with pan-grilled lamb chops with lots of garlic.

Terrale Calatrasi 1996 "Terrale" Sicilian Red Wine ($5.99)
Can you get a good red table wine for six bucks? Perhaps, but this one isn't it. A blend of Nero d'Avala and Merlot grapes, it's a startlingly bright, almost day-glo reddish-purple color, with a sulfurous aroma and barnyard notes that blow off to reveal warm, pruney fruit. It tastes a little better than it smells, juicy red fruit, crisp and tart, but it's still just a little too weird to recommend. U.S. importer: Empson USA Inc., Alexandria, Va. (Aug. 14, 1998)
