La Grange de Quatre Sous 1993 "Les Serrottes" Vin de Pays d'Oc ($12.99)
I've had this Languedoc delight in the tasting queue for a good little while, and found the perfect occasion to open it tonight with a Cajun-style pork gumbo laced with black and white pepper. The "match likes with likes" paradigm paid off; the wine-and-food match was great! Very dark garnet color. Fragrant pepper and black fruit aromas backed by lovely spice and tangerine peel. Flavors consistent with the nose, a boatload of black fruits and delicious spices, pepper and nutmeg and something elusively reminiscent of cardamom. Good acidic structure and solid tannins and overall balance suggest that this will definitely benefit from aging. A Syrah-Malbec blend, I'm told, hence the "Vin de Pays" label; although a high-quality wine, it doesn't meet the local (St.-Chinian) appellation requirements. Importer: Kermit Lynch, Berkeley, Calif.
