Heron 1998 California Syrah ($10.99)
Heron is a new label in this market, and based on the escalating price of California Rhone-style wines, I was a little dubious about what I could expect of this item marked at just over $10. But I took it along to a dinner party with friends who aren't all that into wine, and it proved the hit of the evening. Definitely more in a California than Rhone style, it's ripe, grapey and almost sweet; dark purple in color, it breathes abundant black fruit and oaky vanillins; soft and quaffable on the palate, it may not inspire contemplation, but it's amiable enough to please even the average wine snob; and our friends ended up arguing over who got to take the last glass. FOOD MATCH: Couldn't ask for a better match with mild Indian kofta meatballs and tandoori chicken.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.|
