Messina Hof 1995 "Private Reserve" Texas Cabernet Sauvignon ($14.99) Clear, dark-garnet color. Blueberry and blackcurrant scents and a potent shot of sweet vanilla from American oak. Flavors consistent with the nose, dry and tart, with juicy black fruit and lemony acidity. Not a bad Cabernet at all, reminds me of some similar efforts from the North Fork of Long Island in New York; but it's up against some serious competition at this price point. (July 15, 1997)
