Joseph Drouhin 1996 Chablis Premier Cru ($21.99)France's 3-0 victory over Brazil to claim the World Cup today prompted us to open a particularly fine French wine to salute the winners. This is a clear, pale greenish-gold wine with a very ripe scent of cooking apples overlain with hints of honey and wildflowers. Full, almost sweet apple flavors are mouth-filling and fresh, with tart acidity to hold it in balance through a long finish. U.S. importer: Dreyfus, Ashby & Co., NYC. (July 12, 1998)
FOOD MATCH: Fine with grilled lemon-garlic chicken and baba ganoush.
