Laurel Glen 1996 REDS California Red Table Wine ($7.99)This approachable bargain always seems to get into our marketplace very late, but it's worth the wait. A mixed blend of California red-wine grapes that varies annually depending on availability and the wine maker's whim, it always seems to emerge with more of a Southern French than a Northern California accent; and I invariably like it. The 1996 rendition is a very dark garnet color, with fresh red-fruit and minty aromas and a juicy and tart if rather simple flavor that echoes the nose. Apple-skin and lemony notes persist in a medium-long finish. A fine value! (July 11, 1998) FOOD MATCH: Fine with a simple summer dinner, "red-flannel" hash made with fresh beets and potatoes and beef.
