Te Awa Te Awa Farm 1996 Hawkes Bay (New Zealand) Boundary Merlot ($19.99)
Clear garnet, with spicy red fruit and markedly herbaceous aromas, "green" and full, reminds me of a Loire red. Bright fruit flavors, clean and very tart; piercing acidity makes it a natural at the table, but it's a bit idiosyncratic and certainly pushing the limits for value at this price. FOOD MATCH: Comes into much better balance with pan-grilled boneless chicken breasts topped with sharp provolone and a slice of fresh tomato with a dollop of pesto.
