Zaca Mesa 1996 Santa Barbara County (California) Z Cuvee ($13.99)Clear, dark ruby. Fresh, perfumed red-fruit aromas lead into ripe, jammy and peppery flavors, fragrant and tart, a good quaff and good with food. A decent American rendition of the increasingly popular international "GSM" (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) style, it's a blend of 52% Grenache, 29% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut and 4% Counoise. For an interesting comparison, see my recent notes on Zaca Mesa 1997 Santa Barbara County "Z" Gris ($5.99), made from a similar cuvée. (June 27, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Perfect with New York strip steaks pan-grilled with lots of black pepper.
