Bonny Doon 1996 "Pacific Rim" Monterey (California) Gewurztraminer ($12.99) Pale straw color. Full litchee scent with a floral hint of lilacs and violets, unusual but lovely. Very fruity, very dry, with a significant touch of bitterness on the finish. In his typically offbeat fashion, winemaker Randall Grahm's back label boasts that the wine is "fermented to dryness in neew Vosges puncheons, the subtle sweetness of the wood acts as a perfect foil for the astringency of the bone-dry Gewurz, resulting in a wine that is neither too tannic nor Teutonic." A bad pun; a tasty wine. (April 5, 1998) FOOD MATCH: Almost too intense for a delicate stir-fry of pork and watercress with garlicky black-bean sauce.
