Falchini 1997 Titolato Colombaia Chianti dei Colli Senesi ($10.99)Based on excited reports about the high quality of the 1997 vintage in Tuscany, I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the '97 Chiantis in this market; and I'm very pleased to report that this, the first I've seen here, does not disappoint. Dark ruby in color, it breathes delicious black-cherry aromas with an appetizing overtone of dark brown sugar. Ripe and juicy black fruit and tart lemony acidity show in balance on the palate, with fresh black fruit and a clean, citric snap in a very long finish. A very good Chianti indeed, it's delicious now, and while it's really not for aging, it should fade for at least a year or two. U.S. importer: Martin Scott Wines Ltd., Lake Success, N.Y. (March 23, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Very good indeed with pasta fazool, penne and pinto beans over penne pasta with tomato sauce and cheese, demonstrating that red wine doesn't absolutely require a red-wine match if the meatless accompaniment is hearty enough.
