Today's Wine Tasting Note

I rated the 1993 vintage of this pricey Italian-style red as one of my top wines of 1996, so -- after apparently missing the 1994 entirely -- I couldn't resist snapping this one up, even though it's priced somewhat above my usual threshold of pain. The verdict: It was worth it.

Ferrari-Carano 1995 Sonoma County "Siena" Red Wine ($27.99)
Inky dark-garnet. Delicious aroma leaps from the glass, instantly evoking chocolate-covered cherries. Full, ripe cherry-berry flavor, built on a sturdy acidic structure, with soft tannins in the background. A Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend, this outstanding wine offers one of Caifornia's most exciting responses to the pricey "high-tech Tuscans." And in that company, the price seems like a virtual bargain. (March 7, 1998)
