Cloudy Bay Cloudy Bay 1996 Marlborough (New Zealand) Chardonnay ($21.99)
Clear, bright gold. Apple and pleasant if rather unexpected green-pea and mineral aromas, might make a weird ringer in a blind tasting of quality Austrian Grüner Veltliners! Dry and full-bodied, flavors follow the nose; fresh fruit over a firm acidic structure. Neither Californian nor Burgundian, it's sui generis ... and fine. U.S. importer: Cliquot Inc., NYC. FOOD MATCH: Excellent with a Pacific Rim creation, salmon sausages and tofu in a light soy-tinged chicken stock over cellophane noodles.
