Two good Argentine reds
When I taste wines as good as these two red blends at fair midrange prices, I wish Argentine wines were more readily available in the U.S. At least where I shop, Argentina seem to be the last great undiscovered wine region.

Privada Bodegas Norton 1996 Mendoza Privada Vino Fino Tinto ($13.99)
Dark garnet, with good red-fruit and oregano aromas, herbal and pleasant, framed by spicy oak. Full, fresh and ripe on the palate, flavors follow the nose, ripe fruit and restrained "sweet" oak. U.S. importer: The Hess Collection New World Wines, Napa, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2000)

Carrascal Bodega y Cavas de Weinert 1993 Mendoza Carrascal ($12.99)
Ruby, with an orange glint. Very slight aromas at first, but opens up in the glass to light fruit and marked herbal notes that segue from fennel to licorice. Deep fruit and black licorice on the palate, as strong and tru as childrens' "licorice whips." Intriguing. Black fruit and licorice linger in a long finish. A blend of Merlot (20%), Malbec (50%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). U.S. importer: Vinos USA Inc., Waynesville, N.C. (Feb. 11, 2000)

FOOD MATCH: Both wines go well with long-braised beef short ribs.
