Today's Wine Tasting Note

Dolcetto d'Alba is one of my favorite reds for simple, quaffable enjoyment, but I'm accustomed to seeing a price tag of $12 or so attached to the bottle, so the single-digit label on this one left me a little wary. I needn't have worried, though. It's fine.

Marchesi di Barolo 1996 "Madonna di Como" Dolcetto d'Alba ($8.99)
Very dark garnet color. Heady floral aroma over full black fruit and a spicy whiff of cinnamon. Juicy black-fruit flavor, so ripe that it almost seems sweet, soft at first but tightens up with crisp acidity in the finish. Very good value! U.S. importer: Palm Bay Imports, Boca Raton, Fla. FOOD MATCH: Fine with lamb chops pan-braised in a little dry red wine.
