Peter Lehmann 1995 "The Barossa" Barossa (Australia) Shiraz ($11.99) Inky dark garnet color, almost black. Delicious chocolate aroma over ripe black fruit. Full and ripe, flavors follow the nose, black fruit and chocolate and a whiff of "weedy dill" that suggests time in American oak. In a blind tasting, I suspect I'd mistake it for a Cabernet rather than a Shiraz, but it's definitely appetizing in the oaky Australian style. U.S. importer: Appellation Imports, Annapolis Junction, Md. (Feb. 4, 1998) FOOD MATCH: Surprisingly fetching with a spaghetti-and-asparagus frittata; although eggs are often a tough match for wine, the fruit seemed to highlight the eggy flavor of the frittata while the asparagus tidbits heightened the herbaceous quality in the wine.
