Joseph Phelps 2001 California "Pastiche" ($11.99)
This dark-garnet wine, described by the winery as "inspired by the rich diversity of flavors from the Rhone Valley," respects that inspiration, from its dark-garnet color and appetizing peppery, cherry-berry aromas to its mouth-filling, "chewy" black-fruit flavors and tart acidity. A whiff of sweet leather and gentle tannins add notes of "Old World" complexity in a structured, balanced California wine that's distinctively "Rhone-style." Primarily a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah, with smaller portions of assorted other varieties. US Importer: (Jun 22, 2004)

FOOD MATCH: A natural match with thick pork-chops pan-braised with Vidalia onions and a bit of Dijon mustard in the sauce.

Wine notes in 'shelf-hanger' format:
We publish Wine Lovers' Page tasting reports in the familiar "shelf-hanger" size and format, to make it easy for wine merchants or collectors to print them out, clip and post them where this wine is displayed. We do ask, however, that the name, logo and URL be left intact, and that these reports be used with the specific wines rated, not different bottlings or vintages.

Our tasting policy:
All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I accept no free samples from wineries or distributors, purchasing all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores.
