(For tasting notes on Port, see Wine Value Archive: Fortified Wines.)
Adriano Ramos-Pinto 1992 "Duas Quintas" Douro (Portugal) Vinho Tinto
($6.99)
Dark ruby color. Ripe, plummy scent with a touch of black pepper. Wham!
Whacks you in the palate with BIG flavor, mixed berries and red fruit; firm
acidic structure and substantial but accessible tannins. Robust, strictly a
country wine, but lots of complexity and structure to carry it. Good value
red from a well-known Port house. Importer: Maisons, Marques & Domaines USA
Inc., Oakland, Calif. (Jan. 12, 1996)
Carvalho Ribeiro & Ferreira 1993 Serradayres (Portugal) Vinho Regional
Ribatejo ($5.49)
Ruby red in color, with a tight red-fruit aroma; tart and warm fruit flavor,
plummy, almost pruney, with oaky spice surrounding apples and plums. Importer:
Admiral Wine Merchants, Irvington, N.J. (Dec. 14, 1995)

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
