Wine Advisor Express:
An American Pinot Grigio

Back home in the U.S. this week, still full of thoughts of Northeast Italy's Friuli and its fine wine and food, I happened on an excellent vinous re-entry: Awaiting my return was a bottle of Pinot Grigio from one of my favorite California producers, Mosby Winery and Vineyards of Santa Barbara County.

I tasted a lot of fine Pinot Grigio in Friuli, so opening an American rendition of an Italian model within hours of having tasted the original item at its source might sound like a tough test; but I'm pleased to report that the good folks at Mosby passed with flying colors. If this fresh, aromatic young wine isn't an identical twin of a Friuli Pinot Grigio, it certainly shows a kinship to Italy's best efforts. I've come to expect this kind of quality from Mosby, which produces an extensive line of California wines from Italian grape varieties in an Italian style.

Mosby Mosby 2000 Santa Barbara County Pinot Grigio ($14)
This clear, bright straw-colored wine breathes aromatic and complex scents of acacia flowers and hints of wool, pleasant and typical of the grape. Crisp melon and citric flavors are cleansing and refreshing, emulating the Italian style without giving up its U.S. citizenship. (Oct. 10, 2001)

FOOD MATCH: Perfect with a simple dinner inspired by a dish I enjoyed last week at Castello Di Spesso in Friuli - pan-seared scallops on a base of thick fennel-and-potato "soup" with a drizzle of olive oil.

WEBSITE: The winery's Website is at http://www.mosbywines.com, and you'll find a fact sheet on this particular wine at http://www.mosbywines.com/pages/pinot.htm. (If you live in a place where wine shipment is permitted, wines may be ordered through the site.)
