Wine Advisor Express:
A plea, and a tasting note

Before we get to today's wine note, I ask your consideration for an important effort involving last week's World Trade Center disaster. Windows on the World, the famous restaurant at the top of the Center's North Tower, was destroyed with the buildings. About 70 of the restaurant's employees were at work that morning, and none of them have been accounted for. Many of them leave children with no parents; it's another tragic story among thousands told on this horrible day.

Michael Skurnik Wines, a respected New York wine importer, has established a "Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund" for these families, and WineLoversPage.com is supporting this effort. According to Harmon Skurnik of the import firm, all donations are tax-deductible, and all funds collected will go directly to the families, many of whom are without fathers and mothers now.

You'll find our secure credit-card payment page for this fund at www.wineloverspage.com/windows, along with postal address information for the Fund if you prefer to send a check.

There are many ways to help. This is just one. But because this particular aspect of the tragedy is directly related to the food and wine business and because so many children are in need, I hope you'll consider it worth your generous support.

Now, here's that tasting note:

Primo Palatum Primo Palatum 1997 Minervois la Livinière ($16.99)
This Languedoc wine is a clear, dark garnet in color, with a pleasant and complex aroma of plums, black pepper and hints of leather. Ripe plummy fruit flavors are spiced with a double dash of fragrant pepper, a quality that persists in a long, clean finish. U.S. importer: Not shown on the label; purchased at Old Town Wine in Louisville, http://www.OldTownWine.com. (Sept. 17, 2001)

FOOD MATCH: Although its natural partner might be a grilled steak, its earthy flavors made a very good match with a meatless pasta dinner of porcini-stuffed tortelloni in a light porcini white sauce.
