Wine Advisor Express:
Favorite Wine Link: Royal Ontario Museum

"A remarkable discovery took place at least 7,000 years ago when it was first realized that fermented grapes turned, as if by magic into wine. This momentous event occurred in a neolithic village somewhere in the region between the Black and Caspian Seas ..."

If you enjoy reading about the history, art and culture surrounding wine as much as I do, you won't want to miss a new exhibit, "Gift of the Gods: The Art of Wine and Revelry," at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto.

And thanks to the Internet, even if you live as far from Toronto as I do, you can take in a substantial sample of the exhibit from the comfort of your computer ... without wearing out your feet on hard marble floors.

To visit the virtual exhibit, point your Web browser to http://www.rom.on.ca/, then click on the animated image. Once you're there, you'll find the site easy to navigate, with five buttons on every page so you can move around quickly among "Welcome" (ancient wine from Iran and Turkey to Egypt and the Jordan valley), "Antiquity" (ancient Greece and Rome), "Europe" (medieval times and the Renaissance), "Canada" (in modern times) and, finally, "Gallery," where you'll find more than 20 images of wine-related art and artifacts; click on any image for a larger picture and description. The site is also available in French; click the "Francais" link on any page.

If you're close enough to Toronto to visit the real-world exhibit, which continues until Oct. 21, you'll find much more, of course, in the displays and at special Friday-evening events and tastings. The Royal Ontario Museum is at 100 Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario M5S 2C6, (416) 586-5578. But even if you're limited to the Web version, you'll find it a delight, with readable text and bright, quick graphics that give a good sense of the delay. It's a must-bookmark site for wine lovers.
