Wine Advisor Express:
Tasting Note: Very good Cotes du Rhone

Quite a few of you have tried the Paul Jaboulet Aine "Parallele 45" Cotes du Rhone, the under-$10 item that we selected as the featured wine for this month's Wine Tasting 101.

Today we taste a much more limited-production Cotes-du-Rhone that sells for almost twice as much as Parallele 45, but in fairness, it shows its quality in its ripe fruit, complexity and robust structure. It may be hard to find in some places, but if your local merchants carry this label, it is well worth seeking out.

J. M. Gerin 1999 Cotes du Rhone ($14.99)
This inky dark reddish-purple wine bursts from the glass with full, rich and complex aromas of plummy fruit, black pepper and a restrained, pleasantly earthy whiff of the barnyard. Big, almost "chewy" in texture, it offers dark fruit and fragrant pepper flavors, full and ripe. A remarkable young wine, it's a benchmark Rhone red at a price that's not cheap but fair. U.S. importer: New Castle Imports Inc., Myrtle Beach, S.C. (June 25, 2001)

FOOD MATCH: An inspired choice with rare steak tacos with a roasted red bell pepper puree.
