Wine Advisor Express:
Tasting Note: McLaren Vale Shiraz

Today's tasting note takes us to Australia and to one of my favorite wine regions there: McLaren Vale, a short drive south of the city of Adelaide, strikes me as one of the country's most scenic wine regions; and I really enjoy the style of its red wines ... like this one.

Tatachilla 1998 Mclaren Vale Shiraz ($12.99)
Inky dark-purple in color, typical of Australian Shiraz, this robust wine offers plummy aromas with a distinct whiff of menthol. Ripe black fruit and buttery oak flavors are mouth-filling and full-bodied. The dominance of oak makes it seem a bit one-dimensional at this point, but I suspect that it will reward a little time on the shelf or in the cellar with increasing complexity.

FOOD MATCH: Like most Shiraz, it calls for red meat, but it also gave good service with an Italian-style dish of chopped kale and pancetta tossed with conchiglie (shell pasta).
