Swirling brings out pencil shavings, plums, peppercorns and dusty raspberries - a nicely perfumed nose. Round, palate-encompassing acidity on the entry; tart yet in a balanced way. Pleasant tannic cohesion on the mid-palate; lovely Baco Noir tartness throughout the tasting profile. Mouthwatering texture coupled with tell-tale rustic flavours. (2002-10-24)

Comments: Very enjoyable wine, especially for the price ($9.35 Canadian$). Very nice mix of grape varieties; hints of chocolate abound. Beware, as I have had a few bottles that were not nearly as good as others. When you get a good bottle, it is very good. When you get a not-so-good bottle, you'll know. The wine is worth taking a chance. (2003-01-06)
    48. Chateau Woltner 1998 Howell Mountain Chardonnay California
Comments: After buying two bottles and tasting one I ran back and bought six cases. Howell Mountain is a premium Napa Valley appellation. Woltner is a premium winery. They decided to discontinue Chardonnay and make only red wines. Hence, this is the last. Previously sold for $25 and up per bottle it is being closed out at Duke of Bourbon in Canoga Park, CA and The Wine House in Lost Angeles, CA for $6.99 a bottle or $72 a case. I felt like I should have been wearing a ski mask as I left with my cases. (2003-03-26)

    70. Domaine Gibault Gamay 2001 Touraine France
Comments: Explosive nose. Intense cherry/berry fruit with slight touches of earth and spice. Similar tastes on the palate, though not quite as intense, with lots of tartness and some minerality on the finish. Nice bright acidity but not out of balance. Really enjoyable. (2002-10-21)

    72. Donnhoff "Red Stone" Riesling 2002 Rheinhessen Germany
Comments: A screwcapped Gunderloch of all things. Dina picked it out at World Market the other day. A Rheinhessen Qualitatswein imported by Rudi Weist. Maybe destined for the American Market? With the "Red Stone" name? I don't know. What I do know is that the wine was quite a surprise. Pale, pale yellow in the glass. Quite fruity, but dry, with peach, citrus and melon on the palate. A nice hint of petrol/diesel on the back palate as well as a bit on the nose. Fresh Lime/melon in the nose also. Zingy acidity and a surprisingly long finish for a wine like this. At $6.99 / blt., its a dynamite QPR buy (2004-01-18)

    84. Gotim Bru Costers del Segre tempranillo blend 2001 Catalunya Spain

      Comments:  (2002-10-22)
    86. Harrow Estates Maréchal Foch 2000 Ontario VQA Canada
Comments: Clear dark ruby with a pinkish-magenta rim. Tart beets, game, sour red fruits, brackish/wild grass and vanillin oak aromas (this is the nose immediately upon opening; Foch always evolves given an hour or more of aeration). Zingy acidity on the tip of the tongue. Mouthfeel is tart but very smooth. Clean and brisk mouthfeel; as always, the acidity carries the structure completely. There is but a whisper of youthful tannin on the tip of the tongue. Delightful rusticity. (2002-10-23)
    87. Harrow Estates Marechal Foch 2000 VQA Ontario Canada
Comments: A huge blast of skunky funk and peppercorns that, given about 20 minutes to half-an-hour of aeration, blows off to reveal a delightful core of charry, blackberry/raspberry fruit enveloped in high-quality American oak. An excellent-quality, acid-driven and food-friendly red. $7.95 Cdn. (2002-11-07)
    88. Hedges Columbia Valley CMS 2002 Columbia Valley Washington State - US
Comments: Great bordeaux blend of Cab Sav & Cab Franc, Merlot and Syrah. Heckuva buy. (2004-10-24)
    89. Hernder Estate Baco Noir 1999 Ontario VQA Canada
Comments: I've always seen Hernder's Baco as one of Ontario's best, if not idiosyncratic, iterations of this internationally recognized French hybrid grape. This particular wine won a Bronze medal at the 2001 International Wine and Spirit Competition. 12.5% alc. Dense, medium ruby-garnet; lacks the violet/magenta colour of many other youthful Bacos. Big, smoky oak, hickory woodsmoke and tart black cherry juice, with notes of vanilla. Mouthfillingly tart, round and crisp. Smoky cherry juice and vanillin oak flavours. Very minor tannin. The aftertaste is long and flavourful. (2003-01-04)

Comments: At $6.99 a bottle or $72 for a case this is one of the greatest values in a red wine. Proprietary blend of Rhone varietals. You have to taste it to believe it.  (2003-03-26)

This is very fine Foch. Firm, acid-driven texture on the entry, with very smooth mouthfeel. Acid-defined structure; as is expected, very little tannin. Clean, tart, flavourful finish. (2002-10-23)

      Comments:  (2004-02-16)
    102. Laurel Glen REDS 2000 California US
Comments: Really high quality for the price, with the complexity and flavor interest you would expect of a wine that's much more expensive. (2002-08-17)
    103. Lawson's Dry Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2002 Marlborough NZ
Comments: $10, and the screw cap is an easy twist off. And the 2002 version beats the 2001 version hands down. This is easily case buy material. I'm going to order a second case myself. (2002-10-21)
    104. Les Calades 1999 Vin de Pays de Vaucluse France
Comments: This is from Chateauneuf producer Clos St. Jean - whose Grand Vin is only marginally better at 4 times the cost. Year in and year out this is a fine value - and it is complex enough to enjoy by the case. (2002-10-22)
    105. Les Calades 2000 Vin de Pays de Vaucluse France
Comments: I didn't buy the 1999 but the 2000 is particularly good and the 1998 is just now coming around. I've had the 1994 and 1995 earlier this year--both excellent. (2002-10-22)
