The aromas of earth/loam/dirt filled the stem and there was not a doubt this was old world Burg. Some sour/dried black cherry fruit was eventually coaxed from the wine, but the fruit was definitely in the background. There were still some tannins remaining and although this producer has a reputation for heavy handed use of oak, I did not detect its' over-use. What really stood out was the acidity. Now I do like acid in my wine, but this was even a bit much for me..almost painful. Wait forget the almost part...it was painful! Unbalanced and I doubt it will improve with time.
